Lab Assistant – Selah Dow

Hello!

My name is Selah Dow, I’m a sophomore here at Knox. I am double major in secondary education and history. I am currently employed in both the Abolition Lab and the Student Newspaper, TKS, here at Knox. I am involved in several clubs and extracurriculars, including Enharmonic Fire (a choir), and String Arts Club. I often spending time with friends, read, and exercise while on campus. As well as the obvious time spent on classwork. When I’m off campus I spend my time at home in Boulder, CO. I enjoy hiking, camping, and spending time in nature. I have three cats, Harold, Erik, and Floof, and I have fostered cats in the past. I’m a big animal lover, and volunteered at my local humane society in high school. I dye my hair often, and it is almost always brightly colored, right now it’s blue, but I’ll be dying it green next.

I have several reasons for applying for the Abolition Lab Assistant position. First of all I’m just very passionate about history, I love both learning about and teaching about it. I think the will be an exciting opportunity for me to expand my horizons and practice instructing others in the field. I’m particularly interested in American history, and I find that the ideas of slavery and abolition within our community is both interesting, and extremely important for viewing the past and present. I have written some about the founders of Galesburg in a column on our cemetery, check it out on the TKS website! I also worked under this grant last term in the archives, so I have some experience in the abolitionist history of our school and town.

I look forward to seeing what else we will be able to accomplish with this task!
