Lab Assistant — Ellie/Styx Anderson

Hello! I go by either Ellie or Styx, whichever you remember, honestly. I use they/them pronouns and am a junior, planning on graduating Spring of 2026. I’m majoring in classics, with a double minor in art history and archaeology (though not officially archaeology yet). I’m really interested in very specific parts of history; ancient Greek vase paintings, ancient medical techniques and technology, Victorian literature, fashion, and also medical technique and technology, and any kind of mythology or folklore.

I would likely major in archaeology if I could, but classics is the closest thing to it. I want to go into the museum/library/archivist field, working with artifacts and such to tell the stories of the people who made or used them and the stories the objects themselves tell. I’m really excited to be working at the Abolition Lab because this opportunity has sparked an interest in digital humanities as well. I’ve worked on a few digital projects now (one of which is on the lab website), and I really enjoy it. One of my favorite things is to get into some specific detail and research everything I can about it.

I can’t express enough how excited I am to work in the Abolition Lab, and also how equally anxious I am to do well. I hope that as the year goes on I’m able to get past my anxieties about doing good to actually do well. Thank you so much for reading my little rambling and I’m really looking forward to working together! 😀

Me, dressed up as John Wilkes Booth (per the request of my older sister when she found out about Flunk Day) talking to Lincoln very awkwardly with a water gun, Flunk Day, 2024
Some of my favorite Victorian/Gothic literature books; Phantom of the Opera, Jekyll & Hyde, and Frankenstein, all annotated (for fun!)
Also me at the Field Museum in Chicago, having the time of life in a temporary exhibit about animals and insects that drink blood and mythology around vampires
