Major Conferences and Workshops

From 2022-2025, the Abolition Lab sponsored faculty development workshops and one conference that thematically centered the past, present, and future of the humanities at Knox.

The conference brought together all past and present faculty, staff, students, institutional partners, and community collaborators to share their work over the past three years of the Mellon grant. Together, we celebrated the completion of scholarly and pedagogical projects, community outreach, and professional development.

The Future of Abolition – Faculty Development Workshop

In the third and final year of the Andrew W. Mellon “Abolition for All Time” Humanities Lab grant, this workshop considered how we might mobilize our pedagogical work for a future of innovation, creativity, civic engagement, interdisciplinarity, and a digital age. The necessity of this transformation is critical as our disciplines are rapidly changing under new social, political, economic, environmental, and technological conditions.

Lessons in Liberation: Contemporary Abolition & Knox College in the Twenty-First Century

This workshop explored the legacy of abolitionism after the founding of Knox. Over two days, faculty at this workshop learned about contemporary abolitionist movements and how we might reckon with abolitionism within our professional work and teaching.

Making Knox: The Anti-Slavery and Abolitionist Aspirations of a Midwestern College

This workshop explored our roots as an institution connected to abolitionism. It included opportunities for participants to think differently about the College’s legacy, grapple with founding documents and key questions in its early history, and explore what abolitionism means today
